WARNING: Past-Due Child Support Can Place Your U.S. Passport at Risk!
While many people are aware that unpaid support can result in wage garnishment, tax refund interception, or other penalty enforcement measures, did you know that child support arrears can also jeopardize your international travel?
Wren G. Downs reports that if you owe more than $2,500 in child support arrears, federal law authorizes the denial of a U.S. passport application and, in some circumstances, the revocation of an existing passport.
Wren advises that you could be prevented from an international vacation, work travel, or even leaving the country for a family emergency. And if you are already overseas when your passport is revoked there can be additional complications. Aside from the embarrassment and inconvenience there is the expense of canceled or rescheduled travel reservations that would have to be endured.
Wren notes that if your passport has been revoked, it is no longer valid for international travel, even after the child support debt has been paid. Waiting until shortly before a planned trip as a strategy to address child support arrears can backfire and increase the likelihood of blocked travel, significant cancellation fees and ticket losses, and other best-avoided complications.
If you owe child support arrears or believe enforcement action may be imminent, Wren says, “Do not wait - seek legal advice now!”
Acting fast may open up options, including negotiating payment arrangements, seeking modification of your child support obligation (based on substantial changes in your financial circumstances), addressing the amount of alleged arrears, or working toward bringing your account into compliance.
Wren says, “Act now to address your support problem and not be stranded in traveling outside the United States!”
